Flame ionization detectors (FIDs) use a hydrogen-fueled flame to identify volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in ambient air. They are considered the most effective way to detect these compounds, especially methane (CH4), hydrocarbons, and all other easily flammable constituents. Response from an FID is observed as linear across a wide range of concentrations. Because of the method of detection (a flame), it is very effective in high humidity; however, it destroys most, if not all, of the compounds it is monitoring prohibiting further analysis. Flame ionization detectors are popular instruments for fugitive emissions and landfill gas monitoring.
